Intraday Stock Screening with AI — Find Day Trades Faster#
The hardest part of day trading isn't reading the chart — it's finding the right chart to read. With 5,000+ US stocks trading every day, the challenge is surfacing the 5–10 names that have actionable intraday setups before those setups disappear.
Intraday screening is the filter that does this. Traditional screeners use fixed criteria — price above moving average, volume above threshold, RSI above 70 — and return a list of candidates. AI-powered intraday screening goes further: it scans for visual patterns, detects emerging formations, learns from your trading history, and ranks candidates by the quality of the setup, not just the numeric criteria.
This article covers how AI intraday screening works, the best tools available, and a practical workflow for finding better day trades faster.
How AI Intraday Screening Is Different#
Traditional intraday screening asks: "Which stocks have RSI > 70 and volume > 2× average?" The problem is that 200 stocks might meet those criteria, and most of them are not tradeable setups.
AI screening asks different questions:
- Which stocks are forming real patterns? Not just numeric criteria but visual chart structures — flags, breakouts, pullbacks to support — that experienced traders recognise as high-probability setups.
- Which stocks have confluence? Multiple factors aligning on the same direction — price structure, volume, momentum, and level quality all pointing the same way.
- Which stocks match my trading style? AI that learns from your trade history prioritises setups similar to the ones you've traded profitably in the past.
The result is not a raw list of candidates but a ranked, curated set with explanations for why each stock was surfaced.
The Best Tools for AI Intraday Screening#
1. Trade Ideas — Best for Real-Time AI Screening#
Trade Ideas uses its "Holly" AI engine to screen 5,000+ stocks in real time. Holly analyses price, volume, pattern formations, and market context simultaneously, surfacing candidates with specific reasons — "breakout above 15-minute resistance with 2× average volume" or "pullback to VWAP support with declining volume" — rather than just a list of tickers.
Holly learns from your trading behaviour. If you consistently take and profit from gap-and-go setups, Holly prioritises those over flag patterns or pullback setups. Over time, your scanning queue becomes personalised to your trading style.
Trade Ideas also offers pre-built scans for common intraday strategies: gap scanners, momentum scanners, pullback scanners, opening range breakouts, and volatility scanners.
Best for: Active day traders who scan 100+ names daily and want AI-curated, personalised intraday ideas.
Pricing: From $84/month.
2. TradingLens — Best for Analysing Screener Candidates#
TradingLens is not an intraday screener — it's a chart analysis tool that excels at the step immediately after screening. Once your screener surfaces a candidate, you take a screenshot of that chart and TradingLens returns a complete technical analysis with a structured trading plan in approximately 7 seconds.
The ideal workflow: use Trade Ideas (or similar) to surface 5–10 intraday candidates, screenshot each chart, run through TradingLens, compare the AI-generated trading plans, and pick the 1–3 with the best confluence and risk:reward.
Best for: The analysis step after screening — turning a candidate into a complete intraday trade plan.
Pricing: Free tier available. Premium from $40/month.
3. ChartAlert — Best for Custom Intraday Scans#
ChartAlert is a desktop-based platform that offers deep customisation for intraday scanning. Its AI helps you build scan conditions in natural language — "stocks breaking out of a 15-minute consolidation with above-average volume and RSI below 70" — and runs the scan in real time on 5,000+ stocks.
The desktop architecture gives ChartAlert a speed advantage over web-based screeners for real-time intraday data processing. Scans update in real time as price and volume change, and alerts fire instantly when conditions are met.
Best for: Traders who want deep customisation and real-time desktop-level scan speed.
Pricing: Free tier available. Premium from $15/month.
4. TradingView — Best Free Intraday Screener#
TradingView's free tier includes a screener that covers all US stocks with real-time data (on the paid tier) or delayed data (on the free tier). The AI pattern recognition feature scans for visual patterns across any timeframe, including intraday.
The screener lets you filter by 100+ criteria including technical indicators, pattern formations, and volume characteristics. It's not AI-curated like Trade Ideas — you get a raw list, not a ranked one — but the combination of pattern detection and flexible filtering makes it a powerful free option.
Best for: Traders who want a free, flexible screener with basic AI pattern detection.
Pricing: Free tier available. Premium from $13/month.
The Intraday AI Screening Workflow#
Here's a step-by-step workflow that combines screening and analysis for an efficient intraday routine.
Pre-Market Preparation (20 minutes)#
-
Build your scan parameters. Define what you're looking for today: gap-ups with volume, pre-market movers, stocks near key technical levels, or specific pattern setups. Your AI screener translates these into scan criteria.
-
Run your pre-market scan. Surface 10–20 candidates. Review the list for context — check recent news, earnings dates, and sector alignment for each name.
-
Screenshot and analyse. For your top 5–8 candidates, capture a chart screenshot and run through TradingLens. Review the AI output for each: trend, key levels, pattern detections, and trading plan.
-
Rank your candidates. Based on AI confluence and risk:reward, pick your top 3 for the open. Set alerts at the AI-identified entry, stop, and target levels.
Market Open — First Hour (active monitoring)#
-
Focus on your top 3. The first hour (9:30–10:30 AM ET) produces the highest volume and fastest moves. Watch how each candidate behaves at the AI-identified levels.
-
Re-scan at 10:00 AM. Often the first 30 minutes establish the day's direction. Run a new scan after the initial volatility settles to surface second-wave candidates that are forming clean intraday patterns.
-
Enter on confirmation. Don't trade the alert — trade the confirmation. A breakout above the AI-identified resistance level must sustain above the level for at least one 5-minute candle close with volume.
Midday Session (low volatility)#
-
Run a midday scan. The 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM ET period is typically lower volatility. Use this time to scan for stocks building intraday patterns that could break out in the afternoon.
-
Re-analyse moved names. If any of your morning candidates made a significant move, re-screenshot and re-analyse. Levels shift after large moves — the AI's original plan is already outdated.
Power Hour (2:30 PM – 4:00 PM ET)#
-
Final scan of the day. The last 60–90 minutes of the trading day often produce strong directional moves. Run a scan for intraday breakouts, VWAP rejections, and high-volume movers.
-
Analyse with fresh charts. For afternoon candidates, use fresh intraday screenshots. Levels from the morning may have shifted.
What to Look for in an Intraday Screening Candidate#
Not every screener result is worth your time. Here's how to evaluate candidates quickly.
Green Flags#
- Volume confirms the move. A breakout with 1.5–2× average volume is legitimate. A breakout on declining volume is suspect.
- Multiple timeframe alignment. The intraday setup aligns with the daily trend. A 15-minute pullback in a daily uptrend is stronger than the same pattern in a daily downtrend.
- Clean levels. Support, resistance, and the current price are clearly defined. No ambiguous levels or messy price action.
- Reasonable spread. The bid-ask spread is tight enough that you can enter and exit without significant slippage. For stocks under $20, spread should be no more than a few cents.
Red Flags#
- Low volume. Sub-$1M in average daily volume is dangerous for intraday trading. You might not get filled on entry, and stops can slip significantly.
- News-driven spike without technical basis. A stock spiking on a press release that the AI flagged as a "breakout" is often a sell-the-news event, not a real technical breakout.
- AI pattern with no level confluence. A flag pattern in the middle of a chart with no nearby support or resistance is less meaningful than one forming at a key level.
- Gap up or down without volume follow-through. The gapper that opens 30% higher on low volume often fades through the day. Don't buy the open — wait for the first 30 minutes to establish a pattern.
Common Intraday Screening Mistakes#
Scanning Too Broadly#
A scan for "stocks with RSI > 70 and volume > 1M" might return 150 candidates during active morning hours. That's not screening — that's noise. Add more criteria: "RSI > 70, volume > 2× average, price > $10, market cap > $1B, and within 5% of a 52-week high."
Tight criteria produce fewer, higher-quality candidates. Start with a wide net, look at the results, then tighten each day based on what the market is offering.
Over-Reliance on the Screener#
The screener shows you candidates, but it can't show you context. A stock that screened for "intraday flag pattern" might be flagging after a parabolic rally that's ready to reverse. Look at the daily chart for every intraday screener candidate before taking it seriously.
Not Letting the Setup Develop#
A scanner alert at 9:35 AM for an "opening range breakout" is just a start. Let the setup develop — at least 30–60 minutes of price action — before treating it as actionable. Hitting enter at the first alert is how you buy the top of a one-minute spike.
Ignoring Market Context#
On a day when the S&P 500 is down 2%, most intraday breakouts will fail. On a day when volatility is extremely low, breakouts are rare and unreliable. Always filter your intraday screening results through the lens of what the broader market is doing.
Building Your Intraday Screening Routine#
The most effective intraday screening routine is one you can execute consistently. Here's a minimalist approach:
- Pre-market: 10 candidates from your AI screener → 5 analysed with TradingLens → 3 added to watchlist
- At open: Monitor top 3, wait for confirmation triggers
- 10 AM: Fresh scan for second-wave candidates
- Midday: Scan for afternoon pattern builders
- Power hour: Final scan for closing moves
Each scan takes 2–3 minutes. Each analysis takes 10–15 seconds. The entire daily routine — from pre-market to close — involves about 30–40 minutes of screening and analysis work, producing 2–5 actionable intraday trade ideas.
That's the power of AI intraday screening: less time searching, more time trading, better candidates.
